For forty years, the International Book Project has promoted literacy, educational opportunity and intercultural understanding. Founded by Harriet Van Meter in 1966, the organization has distributed over five million books in developing countries around the globe and underserved communities at home.
Operating out of a modest warehouse in Lexington, Kentucky, IBP ships both sea containers of over 20,000 books to large institutions and individually-crafted Mail-Bags, comprised of a few dozen books, to smaller schools, orphanages and libraries. This dual approach allows IBP to address a wide array of literacy needs, while still retaining the grassroots character fostered by her founder. Sea container shipments, for example, provide thousands of books to libraries and universities in major urban centers across the developing world, while the organization's unique Mail-Bag program allows books to reach some of the earth most remote locations. By matching American book donors with recipients abroad through this program, the project encourages global dialogue as well. Many IBP patrons have corresponded with book recipients for decades, and these intercultural friendships are the building blocks for a peaceful tomorrow.
For four decades, Central Kentucky residents have been integral to the International Book Project's efforts around the globe, donating time, money and books. You too can support the project's many educational programs. Drop off your quality used books at the IBP warehouse, shop in our small used bookstore, contribute funds to an upcoming shipment, or simply log on to our website at www.internationalbookproject.org to learn more about the organization.
